The PlayStation port has its own story mode, entitled ‘Super Story Mode’, which adds several minigames in addition to the major fights in order to flesh out the plot of Stardust Crusaders within the game. Other unique features include ‘Blazing Fists’ in which both fighters have to mash buttons as their Stands punch each other furiously, and the ability to program a Stand to perform a combo and act independently of its user. Even after a Stand Crash has occurred, the crashed Stand can be brought back in just as it would in any other circumstance.

Exclusive to this game is the ‘Stand Crash’ system, in which a character’s Stand has its own health bar, and upon depleting, causes the Stand to disappear and knocking back its user, giving the opponent a free hit. The game uses a 4 button layout as opposed to 6 buttons (the standard for Capcom fighting games), with 3 buttons acting as light, medium, and heavy attacks (as in most Capcom fighting games), and the fourth calling upon and getting rid of each character’s Stand. Both versions were packaged together on 2 discs for Sega Dreamcast in 1999 (as well as a Japan-exclusive second Dreamcast release with the added subtitle ‘For Matching Service’, which added online multiplayer), and a ‘combined version’ that had the aesthetics of the first version but included the added characters of the second version was released on the Sony PlayStation the same year.

An updated version was released in 1999, again for CPS-3 (in Japan with its full title, localised in English as just ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’). JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future is a 2D fighting game developed and published by Capcom, released in 1998 for the CPS-3 (Capcom Play System 3) arcade hardware (in Japan as ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’, localised internationally as ‘JoJo’s Venture’).
